Sunway Malls and FSC Malaysia celebrates Sustainability Day on October 26
Sunway Malls together with FSC Malaysia recently organised a special half-day event on October 26 at the FARM, Sunway Pyramid, a non-commercial space to educate shoppers about urban farming.
The event was held on World Sustainability Day, which is celebrated on the fourth Wednesday of October every year, to emphasise the importance of caring for the environment.
The event was aimed at raising awareness on the importance of responsible forest management and upholding sustainability initiatives such as urban farming that could contribute to climate adaption.
Urban farming[i] including rooftop gardens, indoor and outdoor farms that adopt the best practices and innovative methods can contribute to the overarching goal of reducing human impacts on the climate and building food system resilience (United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 11.6 and 13.2).
The event began with a brief introduction to Sunway Malls ‘Together for Good’ campaign and its ongoing sustainability initiatives.
Participants were then given a farm tour and a detailed explanation of a food composting machine, Food CPR – Compost. Plant. Reduce. The machine converts food waste from the Mall’s tenants into compost. Participants also got their hands dirty as they were given an opportunity to harvest fresh salad variety at the FARM.
The day’s agenda also included a presentation on the current food security and urban farm landscape, and an introduction to sustainable urban farming techniques by Sunway XFarms.
Participants gained hands-on experience growing their on food during a “Grow Your Own Food” workshop. An eco-friendly farm kit was provided for participants to learn how to upcycle plastic waste and grow their own food. The kit comes in an FSC-certified box packaging.
The event ended with a presentation by FSC Malaysia on the importance of responsible forest management, the value of FSC for businesses and consumers, and how choosing sustainably-sourced products can help create resilient forests for now, and the future.
